Into the wild: shadow a wildlife researcher

Step into the world of real field research – raw, authentic, and memorable.

Ababis host researchers carrying out their work on our farm. Currently, Ruben Portas from the Uni LJ and IZW Berlin is studying the ecology of cheetahs and vultures in the Namib Desert. When visiting us, you might have the chance to join him in the field and supporting their work. This isn’t a tourist route, it is an experience behind the scenes, joining a researcher during his daily routine.

What you can experience:

  • ·Two evenings briefing with Ruben: cheetah, leopard and vulture ecology and the purpose of the research.
  • ·Monitoring movements of study animals, visiting GPS clusters in the field, camera traps and cage traps. Learning the field methods and understanding by doing fieldwork.
  • ·Visualising the data collected like real scientists do – your input contributes to ongoing research.

Why you won’t want to miss this:

  • This is a unique opportunity: One day in the field with someone whose knowledge and perspective open a window into the wild that few ever get to see.
  • Authentic: no staged encounters – this is real conservation work.
  • Exclusive: where would you get a similar experience?
  • Extremely limited spots: max. 6 participants per day – personal and in-depth.
  • Support a cause: your participation will directly support the ongoing research in the Namib Desert.
  • The work you will be part of offers a rare insight into cheetah and vulture research looking at their movements, spatial behaviour and ecology and their adaptations to these breathtaking arid environments.
  • A story for life: this isn’t a normal activity during your visit to Namibia – it’s a unique experience.
